{"id":7036,"date":"2025-11-02T15:20:04","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T15:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mountainhighfarms.net\/en\/?p=7036"},"modified":"2025-11-02T15:21:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T15:21:31","slug":"the-decline-of-animal-husbandry-in-armenia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mountainhighfarms.net\/en\/the-decline-of-animal-husbandry-in-armenia\/","title":{"rendered":"The Decline of Animal Husbandry in Armenia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Causes, Consequences, and Possible Solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our article published last year (<a href=\"https:\/\/mountainhighfarms.net\/en\/\u0570\u0561\u0575\u056f\u0561\u056f\u0561\u0576-\u0563\u0575\u0578\u0582\u0572\u0561\u057f\u0576\u057f\u0565\u057d\u0578\u0582\u0569\u0575\u0561\u0576-\u0573\u0563\u0576\u0561\u056a\u0561\u0574\u0576\/\">https:\/\/mountainhighfarms.net\/en\/\u0570\u0561\u0575\u056f\u0561\u056f\u0561\u0576-\u0563\u0575\u0578\u0582\u0572\u0561\u057f\u0576\u057f\u0565\u057d\u0578\u0582\u0569\u0575\u0561\u0576-\u0573\u0563\u0576\u0561\u056a\u0561\u0574\u0576\/<\/a> ), we analyzed the crisis in Armenia\u2019s agriculture, its causes, and proposed several practical solutions.<br>Since then, the situation has not only failed to improve but, according to data published by the Statistical Committee, animal husbandry in Armenia has entered a phase of rapid decline \u2014 one that currently shows no signs of reversal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Numbers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014, the year Armenia joined the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the country had about&nbsp;<strong>677,500 head of cattle<\/strong>.<br>By 2025, that number had dropped to&nbsp;<strong>475,335<\/strong>, meaning a decrease of&nbsp;<strong>202,165 head \u2014 roughly 30%<\/strong>. These figures clearly indicate that animal husbandry in Armenia is in serious decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this sharp drop, the volume of meat imports has not decreased \u2014 it has actually grown.<br>If in 2015 Armenia imported&nbsp;<strong>5.4 thousand tons of beef<\/strong>&nbsp;(around 8% of national demand), by 2024 the figure had reached&nbsp;<strong>8.6 thousand tons<\/strong>, accounting for about&nbsp;<strong>12.5%<\/strong>&nbsp;of domestic demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, beef prices in Armenia have risen&nbsp;<strong>2.5 to 3 times<\/strong>, yet even under such conditions, the cattle population continues to fall. As a result, Armenian consumers are paying ever more each year to foreign \u2014 mainly EAEU \u2014 farmers from&nbsp;<strong>Russia and Belarus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, roughly&nbsp;<strong>50% of Armenia\u2019s total meat demand<\/strong>&nbsp;is covered by imports.<br>In monetary terms, Armenian consumers pay approximately&nbsp;<strong>$320 million annually<\/strong>&nbsp;to foreign farmers for imported meat.<br>More specifically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Beef imports account for\u00a0<strong>12.5%<\/strong>\u00a0of total demand,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pork \u2014\u00a0<strong>51%<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poultry \u2014\u00a0<strong>over 72%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distribution clearly shows that Armenian farmers are unable to compete with foreign producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Analysis of the Causes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of today, only&nbsp;<strong>1.7%<\/strong>&nbsp;of Armenia\u2019s total cattle population is owned by legal entities \u2014 mostly medium to large-scale farms with some investment and basic equipment.<br>The remaining&nbsp;<strong>98.3%<\/strong>&nbsp;belongs to&nbsp;<strong>smallholder rural families<\/strong>, engaged in household-level animal husbandry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These farms typically operate under outdated and inefficient systems, using genetically weak livestock and without proper economic planning. Animals spend around nine months of the year indoors, fed mainly on purchased fodder. For the remaining months, they graze on nearby village pastures, often uncontrolled, which leads to&nbsp;<strong>degradation and desertification of rangelands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lack of sanitary and veterinary separation between herds in villages creates conditions for the spread of&nbsp;<strong>epidemic diseases<\/strong>, resulting in high veterinary costs, livestock losses, and decreased productivity. Consequently, farmers produce&nbsp;<strong>low-quality milk and meat<\/strong>, which can only be sold cheaply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With rising prices of fuel and feed, such farms have become increasingly&nbsp;<strong>unprofitable<\/strong>. Rural farmers often realize they are spending more than they earn, and eventually&nbsp;<strong>sell off their herds<\/strong>. Their place in the market is then taken by&nbsp;<strong>large Russian and Belarusian farms<\/strong>, which enjoy access to cheaper feed, higher productivity, and tariff-free trade within the EAEU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under such conditions, it is remarkable that smallholder farmers in Armenia still manage to survive at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges for Corporate Farms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large-scale farm enterprises, which own about&nbsp;<strong>1.7%<\/strong>&nbsp;of the national herd, also struggle.<br>While they maintain better genetics and some technological capacity, their operations depend heavily on imported feed and equipment \u2014 making them vulnerable to market fluctuations and foreign competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These farms can be competitive&nbsp;<strong>only within the domestic market<\/strong>, and only if they produce&nbsp;<strong>value-added dairy products<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 such as local cheeses, yogurt, and other processed goods.<br>Export opportunities remain almost nonexistent due to high production costs and small-scale operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our view, the key to revitalizing Armenia\u2019s animal husbandry lies in&nbsp;<strong>pasture-based regenerative grazing systems<\/strong>established on&nbsp;<strong>remote rangelands<\/strong>.<br>Such a model would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enable the production of meat and milk without imported feed,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce costs for fuel, buildings, and equipment,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restore degraded rangelands and improve soil health,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transform Armenia from a\u00a0<strong>meat-importing<\/strong>\u00a0to a\u00a0<strong>meat-exporting<\/strong>\u00a0country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can read more about this approach in
