Then it comes in the soil.

The first one is easy to see. The second one must be measured, observed, and managed.

This difference is especially important for regenerative farms. The hills may show the first green color. Cattle and sheep may be eager for fresh forage. Winter feed may be running down. But early green does not always mean the pasture is ready for grazing.

Spring turnout is one of the first major decisions of the grazing year. Done too early, it can weaken regrowth, compact wet soil, delay clover, and reduce forage for the main season. Done correctly, it starts the grazing season with strength.

So the question is not simply whether spring has arrived.

The question is whether the pasture is ready to be grazed — and ready to recover.

Green Grass Is Not Always Ready Grass

In early spring, pasture plants are still rebuilding leaf area, root strength, and energy reserves after winter. At the same time, mountain soils may remain wet and fragile because of snowmelt, cold nights, shaded slopes, spring rain, and forest-edge conditions.

If Black Angus cattle or Dorper sheep enter too early, grazing and hoof pressure can slow regrowth, delay clover, compact soil, reduce water infiltration, create bare patches, and reduce summer forage.

That is why spring turnout must be phased by pasture area, animal class, soil condition, and recovery potential — not by green color alone.

The first spring grazing pass should never be treated as a full harvest. Its purpose is to start the season without weakening the pasture’s recovery capacity. Sometimes this means waiting several more days. Sometimes it means using only drier areas. Sometimes it means grazing lightly and moving quickly.

The goal is not to open the gate early.

The goal is to open it when the pasture can grow back.

Why Farm-Level Weather Data Matters

General forecasts are useful, but mountain pasture decisions need more precision.

A regional forecast rarely captures the full reality of elevation, slope direction, cold-air movement, wind exposure, snowmelt, local rainfall, and forest-edge conditions. A forecast may show warming while the pasture still experiences cold nights. A warm spell may create visible green growth without enough accumulated heat for reliable recovery. Rain after warming can also increase hoof-damage risk on soil that has not yet stabilized.

This is why MHF uses an Ambient Weather Network station to monitor real farm-level conditions: temperature, wind, precipitation, night lows, and drying trends.

AWN helps determine whether spring is truly advancing on the farm or only appearing to advance from a distance. If external forecasts predict warmth but AWN shows cold nights, growth may still be slow. If recent precipitation and new rain are recorded, soil risk may remain high. If sun and wind are drying selected areas faster, phased turnout may begin there first.

In this way, AWN turns weather information into pasture intelligence.

Growing Degree Days Show the Real Speed of Spring

At Mountain High Farms, we also monitor Growing Degree Days, or GDD, to measure accumulated useful warmth for pasture growth.

GDD helps move the decision beyond the calendar and beyond visual greenness. Instead of asking only whether the farm looks green, we can evaluate whether the season has accumulated enough heat to support active plant growth and recovery after grazing.

This is especially important for clover. Grass may begin earlier, while clover often needs warmer conditions. If grass is active but clover remains delayed, the pasture may look ready but may not yet be ready for full grazing pressure.

By tracking GDD, we better judge whether turnout should be delayed, limited, phased, or started with a short first pass.

GDD does not replace walking the pasture. It makes field observation more precise.

How AI Supports the Grazing Decision

Data is only useful when it leads to better decisions.

AI helps us combine AWN readings, GDD accumulation, external forecasts, pasture observations, soil risk, and herd needs into one practical decision framework. It does not replace field judgment. It strengthens it.

AI helps identify whether growth is accelerating or still slow, whether cold nights are limiting recovery, whether rain may increase trampling risk, whether clover is behind, and whether Black Angus cattle or Dorper sheep should be moved differently across pasture areas.

In practice, AI helps to clarify management options. The decision may be to continue hay feeding for several more days, continue stockpiled pasture grazing where soil conditions allow, begin with drier areas, use Dorper sheep selectively, delay Black Angus turnout, avoid wet or shaded sections, or increase rotation speed only after regrowth is visibly stronger.

The final decision still happens in the field. Pasture must still be walked. Plant height, clover development, soil moisture, root anchoring, and hoof impact must still be checked.

AI does not replace the farmer’s eye. It helps organize the evidence before the cost of a wrong decision becomes visible.

From Data to Action

Spring turnout is decided through a practical sequence.

First, AWN data is reviewed to understand actual farm conditions. Then GDD progress is checked to evaluate biological growth. Farm-level data is compared with external forecasts. The pasture is inspected directly. Soil firmness, clover development, plant recovery, and hoof-damage risk are assessed. AI then helps synthesize the evidence into practical management options.

Based on this process, the correct decision may be to wait, graze only selected drier areas, use Dorper sheep before cattle, continue stockpiled pasture grazing, or hold animals on hay for a few more days.

This approach is not technology for its own sake. It is practical regenerative grazing: combining observation, local weather data, biological indicators, and disciplined timing.

Better Pasture Decisions Mean Better Beef and Lamb

Spring turnout is part of the production system behind high-quality Black Angus beef and Dorper lamb.

Healthy pasture supports healthy animals. Strong soil supports stronger forage. Better forage supports better cattle and sheep performance. Careful timing protects the land that feeds the herd and flock.

That is the difference between calendar spring and real spring.

Calendar spring begins with a date.

Real spring begins when the pasture is ready to be grazed — and ready to recover.

Written by Ashot Boghossian, for Mountain High Farms

How AWN Weather Data and AI Guide Spring Pasture Turnout For any pasture-based farm, spring comes twice.
